Day 56 - Love Blooms

Thanks to Kristy's inspirational 'light' photo I decided to try my hand at capturing light. She wasn't kidding when she said it's a lot more difficult than it looks. I turned off all the lights and got out the flashlight. I had Peg making all kinds of objects. We chose the flower you see above. I decided I wanted some red so I took the cover off my iPhone and used it as a filter; kind of felt like McGyver with his gum wrappers and duct tape. I discovered it isn't so easy to draw when you can't see what you've done or where you've been. Definitely a case of trial and error. Anyway, we chose her flower and my heart, I opened them up in Photoshop, did some duplicating and merging and voila, you get blooming love.

that looks cool, but I don't know how you captured it. Can you explain with some detail?

Gisele,

I put my kit lens on the camera and set it up on the tripod. I pointed it down the hall and turned off all the lights. I played with the shutter speed a bit - for the white I think it was at 8 seconds and for the red it was at 2 seconds. It's much easier with two people. One operating the camera and the other moving the lights. Whoever had the light stood at the end of the hallway and started 'drawing' with the flashlight when the shutter opened. By the way, we had to shine the light at the camera to get the shutter to open. I also set a 2 second delay on so I had time to get set up to draw.
I watched a video beforehand. I can't find the one I watched but I just viewed this one and it seems pretty helpful as well. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IS-DBZEXcA&feature=related) He does some really neat stuff.

thanks so much! I really like the way this came out and could get my mind around the shutter part, but not the rest of it.
